JOB POSTING: Curator of Collections

The Des Plaines History Center seeks candidates for the position of Curator of Collections. This position will be responsible for the curation, registration, and management of historic collections and exhibits. Creating and preserving an accurate and useful record of Des Plaines history is central to this role. As a secondary focus, the Curator of Collections will develop public programs in conjunction with the Interpretive Curator.


  • Curate collections of historic objects, art, archives, and photographs related to Des Plaines history
  • Perform all registration activities for the collections
  • Perform all collections management activities for the organization and preservation of the collections
  • Develop and construct exhibits out of the collections and from other relevant sources
  • Work toward the full digitization of the collections
  • Facilitate access to collections and research to walk-in visitors and through digital means
  • Contribute historical content to print and social media outlets
  • Supervise volunteers assisting with collections, programs, and tours
  • Supervise the museum two Sundays per month
  • Be available to work occasional weekend or evening hours for special events

Qualifications & Experience:

  • BA in Museum Studies, History, a related field, or equivalent experience; MA preferred
  • Experience conducting a breadth of work in collections and exhibits
  • Using museum collections and primary sources to serve as the basis for historical interpretation for public programs and education
  • Presenting historical information to public audiences in history, culture, and/or art
  • Must be able to lift at least 20 pounds

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with PastPerfect software
  • Experience integrating digital technology and other interactives into exhibits
  • Experience supervising volunteers, interns, and/or contractors
  • Strong knowledge of digital media and media digitization
  • Bilingual English-Spanish or English-Polish

This is a full-time, exempt position at a starting salary of $30,000 per year with employer-paid health and dental insurance as well as paid vacation and medical leave.
